Srimanta Sankardev was the preacher and founder of Navavaishnavism in Assam.He was born in1449 at Alipukhuri in Baradoa,Nagaon district.His father was Kusumbar Bhuyan and mother Satyasandhya.After the premature demise of his parents during his early childhood.Grandma Khersuti brought him up.
At the age of 12,he joined the 'Tol' of Mahendra Kandali for education.Guru Mahendra Kandali gave him the title of 'Dev' after his education at Mahendra Kandali's 'Tol' was over.His wife's name was Surjyawati.With the help of 'Ankiya Naat' and 'Bhaouna',he tried to initiate romanticism in Assam and worked tiredlessly to intigrate the various class and caste of people under the same roof of vaishnav.Some of his famous works are Rukminiharan,Patniprasad,Kaliyodomon,Keligopal,Ajamil Upakhyan,Parijat Haran,Rambijay etc.His biggest achievement was 'The Kirtan' which became a milestone in Assamese literature.One of his famous disciple was Madhavdev.This great soul closed his eyes forever in the year 1568.
